Mineralogical and microstructural alterations in a portland cement paste after an accelerated decalcification process

چکیده

Cement paste leaching and concomitant decalcification is a common cause of concrete structure deterioration. Such alterations entail microstructural changes that condition durability. This study analysed those in cement pastes exposed to accelerated decalcification, layer-by-layer, from the surface contact with agent, 6 M NH4NO3, unaltered area. The were BSEM, MIP BET whilst mineralogical nanostructural each layer assessed XRD, FTIR, 29Si 27Al MAS NMR BSD. Decalcification affected not only portlandite CSH gel, but also anhydrous clinker ettringite, inducing major micro- nano-structural changes, particularly two layers closest agent. gel was more intense outer where long chain gels co-existed silicon rich gels. BDS, turn, revealed differences between amount bound water interfacing agent front. More specifically, larger numbers molecules tightly silanol groups outer, whereas hydroxyl group distribution orderly inner layers.

Decalcification shrinkage of cement paste

Decalcification of cement paste in concrete is associated with several modes of chemical degradation including leaching, carbonation and sulfate attack. The primary aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of decalcification under saturated conditions on the dimensional stability of cement paste. Thin (0.8 mm) specimens of tricalcium silicate (C3S) paste, white portland cement (W...

Drying Shrinkage Mechanisms in Portland Cement Paste

The shrinkage mechanisms of portland cement paste were investigated from shrinkage, weight loss, and pore structure measurements using nitrogen sorption and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). Thin samples (2.3 mm) of well-hydrated (165 d) pastes of 0.4 and 0.6 water-to-cement (W/C) ratios were dried directly from saturated surface dry state to 75%, SO%, 11%, and 0% relative humidity (rh). Fro...

Effects of High Temperature on Carbonated Calcium Silicate Cement (CSC) and Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) Paste

This paper presents a comparative study on the effects of high temperature (~500°C) on carbonated calcium silicate-based cement (CSC), hydrated ordinary Portland cement (OPC), and hydrated OPC with 20% fly ash (FA) paste samples. The CSC is primarily composed of calcium–silicate minerals with different calcium to silica atomic ratios, such as wollastonite, rankinite, and pseudowollastonite. The...
